Strawopolis

STRAWOPOLIS

“Everyone knows that the clean, busy town, set in the green enamelled country which is framed by wood-crowned hills and the sweeping outline of the Chiltern Range, is the centre of this ancient art and mystery.”

Description of Luton and the hat industry in 1885.

This section contains all things Luton in the Victorian era.  “Strawopolis” and occasionally “Plaitopolis” were nicknames applied to the town.
