Millwall Athletic

Nickname – the Dockers.

From the Luton Reporter of the 4th November 1893 – “It should be here explained that the East End club have changed their colours since last year, their uniform being now dark blue with a very pronounced white stripe.”

Won the Luton Charity Cup in 1892 and the Southern League in 1895 and 1896.

Saint Albans

Wore amber and blue until October 1893 when they changed their shirt colours to black and pink.  Nickname the “Saints” and latterly “the Pinks.”  Source – Various newspapers of the time taken from the scarpbook of Jack Dickerson.

The above photo is from 1891/92.  The missing name is that of the irrepressible Sandford Ffolliott Pierpoint Moore.  S.F.P. played for the Straw Plaiters as did Dickerson, Dickson and the Reverend Bennett.

St. Albans 1895:96

The above photo is from 1895/96.  Five of these players also played for the Straw Plaiters, Alfred “Jack” Hoy (back row 5th left), Albert Sanders (seated 2nd left) with Jack Dickerson next to him in the centre.  The two players seated on the ground are Fred Allen (left) and William “Tip” Brown.

Second Scots Guards

The above is from the Illustrated Sports and Dramatic News 26th December 1891.  The South Bucks Standard of the 20th February 1891 reveals that the Second Scots Guards wore black and white striped shirts and black shorts.

Unity F.C.  From Tarn and Sons, Newington Causeway, London who were a firm of tanners (source Luton Times Newspaper of 29th December 1888).  Home ground at Wimbledon (source – 1887/88 LTFC Member’s ticket).  Luton Reporter of 30th December 1887 – “Luton Town v Wimbledon.  The Luton Town Football Club sent a team to Wimbledon on Saturday to contest and eleven of the Unity Club.”  The Luton Times of 30th December 1887 also covered the game and said – “the match being played on the splendid enclosed ground of the Unity Club.”

Folded in 1893 but reformed the following year when this photo was taken.  Amalgamated with West Herts in 1898 to form Watford F.C.

One of the greats of southern football in the 1880’s and early 1890’s, Freddy was a much feared forward.  The Straw Plaiters were always grateful when he was not in the Watford Rovers or West Herts team.

The above clip is from the Hertfordshire Advertiser of the 25th April 1891.  I assume it would have been used by the football team as well as other sports.
